Ideas for an age of uncertainty.
The Conservative Nexus is an independent European conservative think tank based in Portugal, examining the political, economic, technological and cultural forces reshaping Europe and the Atlantic world.
A European institution looking beyond the news cycle.
The Conservative Nexus is an independent European conservative think tank based in Portugal, created to examine the political, economic, technological and cultural transformations reshaping Europe and the wider Atlantic world.
We believe that periods of uncertainty require more than commentary. They require institutions capable of thinking beyond the news cycle, challenging prevailing assumptions and reconnecting contemporary debates with history, responsibility and political reality.
Our work focuses on the forces that will shape the coming decades: geopolitics, economic sovereignty, artificial intelligence and technological power, education, culture, European identity and the future of the Euro-Atlantic relationship.
The Nexus brings these questions together.
We approach them from a conservative intellectual tradition that values freedom, responsibility, democratic institutions, national sovereignty, cultural inheritance, merit and the institutions that sustain free societies.
But intellectual seriousness requires more than ideological certainty. It requires evidence, disagreement, curiosity and the willingness to confront uncomfortable facts.
For that reason, The Conservative Nexus seeks to be a meeting point between ideas and reality — between Portugal, Europe and the Atlantic; between political thought and public policy; between inherited wisdom and technological change.
Portugal
Portugal gives The Conservative Nexus a distinctive vantage point. It is simultaneously European, Atlantic and connected through history and language to a global Lusophone community. From this position, we seek to contribute to a wider international conversation about Europe’s future and its place in a changing world.
Independent thought. Serious debate. Long-term perspective.
The mission of The Conservative Nexus is to strengthen the intellectual foundations of free, responsible and resilient societies. We exist to produce and promote serious analysis of the political, economic, technological and cultural forces transforming Europe. Our purpose is not simply to react to events. It is to understand what lies beneath them.
Understand
Examine the deeper political, historical and institutional forces behind contemporary events.
Research
Produce serious analysis grounded in evidence, context and intellectual independence.
Challenge
Question prevailing assumptions and create space for arguments that deserve scrutiny.
Connect
Bring together Portugal, Europe and the Atlantic in a wider intellectual conversation.
Develop
Encourage ideas capable of informing policy, institutions and public debate.
Transmit
Preserve and renew the ideas, standards and inheritance on which free societies depend.
Free societies depend upon institutions that cannot be created overnight. Conservatism, at its best, understands both obligations: to preserve what remains valuable and to reform what no longer works.
The forces shaping Europe.
Our research programme focuses on the major political, technological, economic and cultural transformations likely to define the coming decades.
Geopolitics & Europe
Power is returning to international politics. War, strategic competition, migration, energy, defence and the changing global balance are forcing Europe to reconsider assumptions formed during the post-Cold War era.
The Euro-Atlantic Axis
Europe cannot be understood without the Atlantic. We study relations between Europe and the United States, NATO, Atlantic security and Portugal’s distinctive position between continental Europe, the Atlantic and the Lusophone world.
Technology, AI & Power
Artificial intelligence is becoming an economic, political and geopolitical force. The central question is no longer simply what technology can do, but who will control it, under what rules and with what consequences for human freedom.
Economy & Competitiveness
Europe faces a fundamental challenge: how to preserve prosperity, innovation and social stability in an increasingly competitive global economy.
Education, Merit & Responsibility
Education transmits more than skills. It transmits knowledge, standards, expectations and civilisation itself.
Culture & Ideas
Political institutions cannot be separated from the culture that sustains them. We explore thinkers, books, historical experiences and cultural traditions that have shaped Western political thought.
